The Beatles are overrated

Yes, I just made that accusation. After 23 years I have yet to understand the fascination people continue to have with The Beatles. Sure, some of their songs may be good. I can admit I have listened to my fair share of Let It Be and Eleanor Rigby, but on the whole the Beatles just don't do much for me.

The Beatles' cult following is especially surprising when you look at how strong and consistent it has been for nearly 50 years! I just wonder if people like the band for the music or if they are attracted to it as a symbol and what it represents (peace, love, LSD).

There have been plenty of bands with more talent and music writing abilities than the Beatles ever had. Yet these bands haven't garnered nearly as much attention or respect as Lennon and the crew did (here's an example).

But maybe this is just biased opinion and I should stick with "to each their own"...nah. The Beatles are overrated.

Chad

P.S. Am I the only one who feels this way?

Agreed, except for the part where you said our band has more talent than the Beatles. In that case, I would refer you to yesterday's practice of the song "Mind."

I was going to do a full rebuttal to this, but I don't think there is a need beyond this comment.

There are many reasons they have lasted, including:

Pushing genres. Listen to one of their albums from the start of their career, and one of them from the end. They integrated instruments that I haven't even heard of, and forged a way for other musicians to follow.

Saying that other musicians are better than them may be true in a way, but this is the reason it is incorrect. Those musicians are standing on their shoulders. comparing modern artists to the Beatles is like saying Steve Wozniaks Apple II computer sucked because it couldn't do much. For its time it was revolutionary!

Also, you may not like the music they made, but that doesn't mean it is bad. Their melodies are tight, and you can't deny their skill with their instruments. Even the songs with simple structure have intricate riffs intertwined.

Combine this with the fact that everything they recorded was on a 4 track recorder. 4 tracks! Nowdays recording is much, much easier.

That is all.

I completely agree. The Beatles ARE overrated! I can't tolerate those who are obsessed with them. I've tried and I simply can not.
